I believed the news should be treated with the same reverence a priest gave to communion wafers. Prig might be the best word to describe me at that stage of my career. Now here I was, forced by necessity to be among people who were having fun with a radio program. How soon could I get out of here and return to broadcast journalism? Could I get away with leaving my NPR period off my résumé? All Things Considered was a ninety-minute program heard live at 5:00 pm Eastern Time. I was hired to produce and read two newscasts, plus two more when a tape of the program was fed to stations at 8:00 pm.

If North Korean forces attacked, our job was to load up the remote truck and head south to safety. Now that’s my kind of military unit! S. Army installations in Seoul were located in Yongsan Compound, a nice chunk of real estate just a short taxi ride from downtown. AFKN occupied a sort of compound within the compound because it was isolated atop a hill. The studios and offices were in an ugly, cramped cinderblock building and a couple of new prefabricated structures. Living quarters were Quonset huts, individual “rooms” sectioned off by wallboard with curtains for doors.
