Probably he thought that WKRP wouldn't go. Like I say, it's all a crap shoot-you never know. " Bonner wasn't the only character to find himself second or third on the list. "I think, out of the eight characters on WKRP, with the exception of maybe two-Jan Smithers ... " Herb was a test character, which meant that Bonner was signed to seven out of the original 13 episodes ordered by the network. " According to Bonner, the original concept of Herb had nothing to do with the wardrobe, although Wilson has suggested that Clark Brown, the character upon which Herb was based, did dress in a similar fashion.
I drove down there and gave my speech to Grant and Hugh, saying that the way the character was in the script was not the way I would do the role. ' Apparently he and Hugh were impressed, and by Monday we were making arrangements [for me to take the role)" (Anderson). ' We would always let her do that, play that out-hell, they're not interviewing me anyhow-but [Jennifer] was never [to be] a dumb blonde. That was in the plans right from the beginning" (Wilson). While other actors and writers who were privy to that first script concur with Wilson's version of the story, it is difficult to say with certainty which version is the most accurate.
I think 1 had one joke in the pilot, Dial had three or four, and Blake probably had one or two-but the rest was all Hugh's" (Chehak). "During production," added Hunter, " ... a lot of rewriting goes on... You'll be writing in a room with a group of people and you'll be going through, punching up, making new jokes, changing things that don't work-you start taking scenes in or out-and Hugh was at the helm, but the people in the room were contributing. That was the rewrite process, but the script was definitely his" (Hunter).
